Elmbrook remains committed not only to meeting immediate, physical needs of the people of Haiti, but also to providing long-term, mutli-level care on an ongoing basis. In the days following the January earthquake in Port-au-Prince, the Elmbrook congregation sent $80,000 to World Relief to aid in the immediate response to the disaster. Since that time, Elmbrook has sent a grief and trauma team to work with World Relief leaders on the ground, as well as two medical teams. A construction team and several non-medical teams will be sent in the coming months to assist with recovery on a number of levels.
Elmbrook's disability ministry also coordinated a drive in March, collecting a variety of vital supplies:
-372 sets of crutches -228 walkers -204 canes -95 braces: legs, neck, back, hand, food, leg, etc. -5 artificial limbs -25 wheelchairs* -Lots of adaptive care items (shower chairs, portable commodes, etc.)* -22 cases of Ensure -Three doctors brought good size quantities of medical supplies -Multiple boxes of toiletries -Multiple boxes of canned food, dry milk, baby formula, etc.
We are currently partnering with World Relief, Cure International, and Samaritan's Purse in relief efforts and non-medical teams from Elmbrook will continue to form in the coming months. Two construction teams are currently forming for the spring and a non-medical team will be sent June 14-20. Before being considered for a SEND team, training is required, and there are a number of considerations to make. Read this list of requirements from teams that have recently returned from Haiti.
