Where are we going? Potter’s House (PHA) https://pottershouse.org.gt/

Potter's House has been a friend of Elmbrook Church since the 1990s. This organization welcomes a wide variety of service teams visiting every year; Elmbrook is well-known to them, and they are to us. Please read more about this organization on their website, making a special note that their work on understanding and responding to poverty https://pottershouse.org.gt/understanding-poverty/ is fundamental and holistic.

Students who participate in a short-term project at PHA will be immersed in a laboratory in which they learn to discern the dynamics of poverty and learn healthy ways to respond to the need. We anticipate a week-long project in which our team will construct a simple home and a "hygiene combo" for a family identified by the community leaders as in need. The hygiene combo includes a stove, dishwashing area, toilet, and shower capabilities. The family who will occupy the space will have done a lot of work to prepare for this, and the team will have the privilege of turning over the keys to the home to the family at the end of the project. This project will take place in Chiquimula, Guatemala, where the climate is hot and dry. The team will arrange travel to Guatemala City, then PHA will manage in-country transportation, housing, meals, translation, and materials for building. The local indigenous language is Spanish, so students who have been studying Spanish will be able to practice their skills.
